Outline of sermon for Gateway community church

Romans 12:3-8
New Living Translation (NLT)
3 Because of the privilege and authorityGod has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.[b] 4 Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, 5 so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.

6 In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. 7 If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. 8 If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

The Body of Christ is the most fundamental metaphor Scripture uses to describe the church, in fact it might be more than a metaphor, we in some senses carry on Christ’s work. So it’s vital we learn to BE THE BODY. Paul in these verses talks to us about the attitudes that allow a community of people to BE THE BODY OF CHRIST

RIGHT ATTITUDE TO YOURSELF

“Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given you”

This is a difficult phrase , it doesn’t mean we evaluate ourselves on HOW MUCH faith god has given us but by THE FAITH, the content of our faith, Christ crucified and risen, our need for grace.

When we do that it will bring humility because everyone of us will be forced to realise we are all sinners saved by grace, there is no room at the foot of the cross for feelings of superiority ( or inferiority) and so neither can there be in the body of Christ. Pride prevents us being the body so it must be ruthless ruled out in our thinking.

RIGHT ATTITUDE TO OTHER BELIEVERS

” Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, 5 so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.”

For increasing numbers of Christians they “believe without belonging” or ” they attend without belonging” they either don’t become part of a local expression of the Body of Christ or they live parallel lives with other believers and turn up at the same worship service.

In contrast Paul says our attitude to other believers should be that ” we belong to each other” the Body of Christ is a community of shared lives not superficial relationships.

RIGHT ATTITUDE TO SPIRITUAL GIFTS

These are Paul’s NIKE verses ….

He says very believer in the Body has been gifted in some way, these are representative. Now we need to JUST DO IT, whatever our gift is we need to use it.

Scandal that in most churches 80% of the work is carried our by 20% of the people. Some people need to give up some ministries to let others use their gifts and others need to take up some ministries to use their gifts.

CONCLUSION

So what have we leaned about the body of Christ. Well that it is

A Community Of
Acceptance ( so we need Humility, we shouldn’t think too highly of ourselves )
Belonging ( so we need to have a Commitment to share our lives )
Purpose ( so we need to have a place of service where we can use our gift )

SO LETS BE THE BODY
